My son finally came to me and asked about Santa Claus. I had been preparing for the question for almost three years, but it still made me a little sad to know this magical part of his childhood was coming to an end. My greatest fear was that he would turn around and tell his little sister, who is only in kindergarten. That is just what I did when my older brother told me about Santa, and my sister has never quite forgiven me. (Perhaps that’s why I now sell printable Santa letter templates – to keep Santa’s magic alive for other little children and pay penance for my earlier misdeed! )

Fortunately, I knew just what I wanted to say to my son about the legend of Santa Claus.

I told him that Santa was a real man who lived in the fourth century and was known for his kindness and generosity, especially to children. Nicholas was such a good person that he has inspired millions of people for thousands of years to continue bringing joy to children. How many other people in history have had such an impact?

I told my son that he’s now part of the secret society of people who safeguard Santa’s secret and are charged with continuing his legacy. He was excited to become part of this “adult” group, and now wants to make sure his little sister continues to believe in Santa as long as possible.

I’m sad to see this chapter of my son’s childhood coming to an end, but I’m glad he understands and magic that Santa inspires and is anxious to keep it alive for his sister.

Christmas is a time for rejoicing and celebrating the birth of Jesus as well as eating too much and swapping gifts! The beginning of December welcomes the opening of countless Christmas markets around the world and they are a fun and traditional way to shop for seasonal gifts and decorations. Christmas markets originated in Germany and Alsace and they are now held on the streets for the four weeks of Advent in countries all over the world including Romania, Argentina and Spain.

A History of Christmas Markets

Christmas markets boast a long and interesting history and one of the oldest of its kind is the Dresden Christmas Market that was first held in 1434. However the Bautzen Christmas Market has been running since 1384 and German Christmas markets remain some of the most popular markets in the world although many countries have since adopted the seasonal market spirit. Food and drink as well as singing and dancing are commonplace at Christmas markets. Various seasonal items are for sale that range from handmade jewellery through to arts and crafts and these traditional offerings have been part of the Christmas market scene since their inception.

Attractions and Gifts

The stalls found in Christmas markets usually sell a range of Christmas decorations and souvenirs that are often handmade by local businesses, children and charities. A firework display may mark the opening of the markets along with nativity plays and copious amounts of dancing and Christmas carol singing. As the markets are usually held on the streets, the stalls are temporary and range from basic tables to wooden huts and shacks. A tall Christmas tree will often boast centre stage at Christmas markets and decorations will be for sale at the various stands. Christmas cookies and seasonal gifts are usually on sale as opposed to gifts that don’t have a Christmas theme found in shops and stores. Warm drinks accompanied by hot snacks are often found in these traditional markets.

Here are a few of the more common features found in worldwide Christmas markets:

* Central location* Music and dancing* Plays and nativity decorations* A novelty Santa dishing out presents* An ice rink

German Christmas Markets

Around two million keen Christmas shoppers flock to Dresden every year for its market and it has more than 60 stalls to explore. Many of the German Christmas markets and others around the world have popular opening nights that will welcome various plays and scenes often performed by local school children. Fireworks, Christmas lights and decorations can be seen for miles around. Gl

Christmas Shopping in Stratford is always a very special occasion as you can expect certain shops to stay open late for those last minute shoppers making that all important Christmas purchase to free car parking in certain areas of the town to the world famous local and continental markets that will be open over the festive period and Christmas would not be Christmas if the town did not switch the Christmas Lights on and have Santa’s Grotto there for the kids to enjoy.

Late Night Christmas Shopping

Christmas Shopping in Stratford upon Avon is a hugely enjoyable experience the Town Centre has all the big name retailers essential for all your Christmas purchases with over 170 different brand names to pick from to smaller independent retailers from bespoke craft shops to stylish boutiques so you are assured you will find the ideal gift for everyone on your Christmas shopping list.
Why not enjoy Christmas abroad this year and experience the incredible celebrations put on across Italy, France and Spain? There is no doubt that the Christmas markets in London, Manchester, Birmingham and other UK cities are impressive, but experiencing Italian, French and Spanish festivities is something that everyone really should put on their Christmas wish list.

The festive season should be filled with fun, food and laughter, and these are the things you will find in abundance when you take a four or five day escorted tour to the Paris Christmas markets, Barcelona Christmas markets or Italian Alpine Christmas markets. Whichever country tickles your fancy, you won’t be disappointed by the atmosphere or the festive decorations and traditions that you’ll find in the Piazzas of Italy, the Places of France and the Barras of Catalonia.

Sights and sounds not to be missed at Christmastime in Europe:

ItalyChoose from Christmas breaks to Lake Garda and trips to the Italian Alpine Christmas markets, and experience a magical few days tasting the renowned Italian cuisine and browsing all that Italy has to offer. If you choose Christmas in Lake Garda you will see immediately what all the fuss is about when you arrive and see the mirror-calm waters, the craggy and dramatic mountainous backdrop and the pastel-coloured houses that line the shores. Lake Garda is one of the most idyllic places to base yourself from if you plan to visit some of Italy’s most prominent cities, from Romeo and Juliet’s “fair Verona”, to the Christmas markets of Trento – a great place to finish off your Christmas shopping. On Christmas Eve you can attend a traditional midnight mass at the church in Riva del Garda and welcome Christmas in the traditional style. Then enjoy Christmas day on the Lake, exploring the shoreline, before mooring and enjoying a four-course Christmas dinner complete with live music and entertainment.

If you choose to leave Lake Garda for another time and instead visit the Italian Alps and the Christmas markets in Bolzano and Merano, you will see exactly what a white Christmas should look like, thanks to the snow-capped Alps and the rooftops of the houses in the Alpine towns and villages. Spend your days perusing the local arts and crafts, and pick up some unusual and unique Christmas gifts for friends and family back home, before tucking into traditional Italian cuisine and warm spiced red wine.

FranceIf a Christmas markets break is what you want, then Paris is the city for you thanks to the incredible work that goes into dressing, decorating and lighting France’s capital. Don’t miss the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Louvre, Notre Dame and the Champs Elysees in all their festive glory; these sights are particularly impressive at night when they’re lit up against the night sky and when the hustle, bustle and aroma of the Christmas markets at La Defense (the business district) fills the air. Experience Paris with the help of an experience tour guide when you choose escorted tours to France, and don’t miss out on all the things this great city has to offer quite apart from all the fun you’ll have practicing your French with the Christmas market stall holders, trying the food and drink that is on offer and investing in festive arts and crafts for friends at home.

SpainVisit Barcelona’s Christmas markets for the ultimate Spanish festive experience because, while being by the sea might not conjure up festive thoughts, Barcelona is so much more than a seaside city. Home to some of the most incredible Modernist architecture, to authentic and delicious tapas that changes with the seasons and, of course, to the Christmas markets during December, Barcelona is definitely worth a tour. Simply strolling the main areas of the city will give you an insight into how the Catalans celebrate Christmas. Take inspiration home with you, as well as some of the traditional, handcrafted jewellery, artworks and woodcrafts that are sold on the market stalls.

There are two main Christmas markets sites in Barcelona, the Fira de Santa Llucia and the Fira de Nadal, in the shadow of Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia, one of the world’s most awe-inspiring cathedrals. Whichever one you pick, you’ll also see just what food is traditional in Spain and how it differs from the turkey dinner we’re used to.

So, why not broaden your festive horizons this year and spend a few days at one of the atmospheric Christmas markets of Italy, Spain or France?

There are many Christmas Market Breaks in Europe such as Barcelona Christmas Market Breaks that could be the perfect getaway this winter.

When somebody says Christmas at this very moment, what plays in your mind? I bet there’s Christmas tree in it, or stockings hanging by the fireplace probably? What about kiss under the mistletoe? Or the red-nosed reindeer? All these customs and traditions, and many others, have become essential in making the celebration ‘Christmasy’, that it becomes almost impossible to do away with these.

The following are the top 6 traditions that continue to play a role in the celebration of Christmas all over the globe:

1. Christmas Tree. Undeniably, there is no greater or more easily distinguished symbol of Christmas than the Christmas tree itself. It can be found in almost all homes and establishments and is the most enduring icon of all.

The tradition of putting up a tree takes its roots in the pre-Christian era when ancient Romans keep decorated trees in their homes to commemorate their Saturnalia festival. During the 15th to 16th centuries, the Germans made use of Christmas trees decorated with candies, apples and colored papers. It was Martin Luther King who began the idea of lighting candles on Christmas trees, as enthused by the stars shining through the leaves of the trees outside.

The husband of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, was the one to introduce the concept to England from his native land Germany. The Pennsylvanian Germans were the ones to bring the Christmas tree to America in the late 19th century. Up to the present time, this tradition has become an inseparable part of Christmas celebration.

2. Santa Claus. Every kid’s fondest fantasy when it comes to Christmas is no other than Santa Claus himself. Christmas, in a child’s perspective, is a time to hang stockings by Christmas Eve and eagerly wait for Santa to drop by on his reindeer-drawn sleigh.

The mythical icon of Christmas sprang from the persona of Bishop Nicholas in 4th century AD who was known to be bighearted and fond of children. After many years, he came to be known as Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of children.

The Anglo-Saxon version of Santa – Father Christmas – was said to punish naughty children and reward the well-behaved ones. Additionally, the British, German, and Dutch settlers of North America brought with them their own version of this jolly man in a red suit. However, the Dutch’s Sinterklaas emerged as the more popular among them. Dutch children would leave their wooden shoes by the fireplace during Christmas Eve, and Sinterklaas would creep in and place goodies in the shoes of the nice children. It was his name that was anglicized to the name Santa Claus we now know.

3. Kissing Under the Mistletoe. Another time-honored Christmas tradition! This green plant was used by Druid priests some 200 years before Christ’s birth during their winter celebrations. The plant was highly valued due to its ability to stay green even during the harsh months of winter.

Ancient Celts attributed magical healing powers to the mistletoe, while the ancient Romans regarded the plant as a symbol of peace. Enemies suddenly become friends if they happen to meet under the mistletoe.

The tradition of kissing under the mistletoe most probably originated from the Scandinavians. They associated the plant with Frigga, their goddess of love. It is said that good luck and happiness come to those who kiss under it.

4. Rudolf, the Red-Nosed Reindeer. It is fascinating to not how some things originate from unrelated sources, just like Rudolf (the red-nosed reindeer). In 1939, Robert may (a copyrighter at Montgomery Ward Department Store), was told to write a Christmas-themed story to get in more sales. He wrote about Rudolf, a reindeer who was exiled by his own kind because of his glowing red nose. However one Christmas Eve night made Rudolf an instant star when Santa himself chose him to lead the sleight that night.

That year, Montgomery Ward sold almost 2.5 million copies of the story. In 1949, songwriter Johnny Marks (May’s brother-in-law) wrote the lyrics and melody for the song “Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” thus the birth of the popular and well-loved Christmas song of all time.

5. Christmas Stockings. It has become an annual practice for children to hang stockings and socks near the chimney or fireplace every Christmas Eve for Santa to fill with presents. This tradition takes its roots from an ancient legend of a nobleman who frittered away all his fortune after his wife’s untimely death, leaving his three unmarried daughters facing poverty.

One night, as the daughters washed and hung their stockings to dry by the chimney, Saint Nicholas was moved by the hapless girls. So he came by the night and placed gold in each of their stockings.

As the morning came, the family was surprised and overjoyed with what they saw. The delighted nobleman could now marry off all his daughters. And that’s how the tradition of hanging stockings came to be.

6. Christmas Cards. The Christmas card was born, out of a desperate necessity, in England 160 years ago. Sir Henry Cole (director of London’s Victoria and Albert Museum) was overwhelmed by the work commitments in the Christmas of 1843. Pressured by the need to write individual greetings to all his friends, he commissioned artist John Calcott Horsley to make a painting which featured three panels. The first and third panels showed feeding and clothing the poor, while the central panel illustrated a family enjoying Christmas together. The words “A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You” were inscribed in the card.

Traditions have become important part of the celebration of Christmas as it brings friends and families together, making everyone’s lives richer and fuller.

Have you wondered how people from other parts of the world decorate their Christmas trees? You may have assumed that they do theirs just like the way you do, just like everybody else does. Letâ??s try to delve as to how something so common as the Christmas tree can be embellished in entirely dissimilar ways.

German Christmas Trees(Weihnachtsbaum )Much of the current Christmas traditions emanated from Germany. There are at least 2 versions as to how Weihnachtsbaum came into being.

The first speaks of Martin Luther who had gone into the woods for a walk near his place. He was amazed at how the stars beautifully sparkled through the forest, and wanted to share the splendid beauty to his wife so he slashed down a fir tree and brought it home with him. Then he placed small candles on the treeâ??s branches and pronounced that it symbolized the beautiful Christmas sky.

On the other hand, another legend has it that in the early 16th century, the Germans practiced two combined customs that were performed in different countries â?? the Paradise tree and the Christmas Light. The former is a fir tree adorned with apples and symbolized the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden. The second one is a small pyramid-like frame decorated with tinsel, glass balls and a candle on top, and represented the birth of Christ as the Light of the World. If we change the tinsel balls and cookies for the apples and cookies and the lights, it is apparent that the Germans created the tree that most of us are familiar with.

Norwegian Christmas Trees (Juletre)Oftentimes, Norwegians make trip to the woods and select a Juletre themselves. It was not until the latter of half of the 19th century that the Juletre was introduced in Norway.

On the Eve of Christmas, it was usually set up by the parents as the kids wait for them to finish. A Juletre is decorated with tinsel, Norwegian flags, white lights, and other decors. Children make use of shiny, colored papers to make paper baskets filled with nuts or candies. Colored lights are becoming popular however the white lights resemble more the candles they are supposed to represent.

Italian Christmas Trees(Albero di Natale)The nativity scene (â??presepioâ??) is very common in Italy. It is set in the shape of a triangle which is the base of the â??ceppo,â?? a pyramid-like structure. This is decorated with colored papers, miniature colored pennants, and gilt pine cones. There are small candles placed to the tapering sides. On top is a star or a small doll. The shelves above the manger carry presents of candies and fruits.

Swedish Christmas Trees (Julgran)Most Swedes purchase their Julgran way ahead of time. It is not uncommon to grab the Julgran inside and embellish it few days before Christmas. These are decorated with sunbursts, snowflakes and stars made out of straw, and may include colorful straw centerpieces and wooden animals.

Canadian Christmas TreesBefore the 19th century, the Germans had migrated to Canada from Germany and the United States. They brought with them lots of the things we associate with Christmas today such as gingerbread houses, Christmas cookies, Advent calendars and Christmas trees.

English Christmas TreesPrince Albert (Queen Victoriaâ??s German spouse) set up a Christmas tree in 1848 at Windsor Castle and almost instantaneously, it had become a tradition in England, Canada and the United States. Presently, the traditional tree used in British homes is the Norway spruce. It was formerly used by a native tribe in the United Kingdom (up until the last Ice Age) and was reintroduced before the 15th century.

Greenlandic Christmas TreesDue to the arctic climate, Christmas trees donâ??t grow in the area so these are shipped all the way from Denmark. Greenlanders decorate their trees with bright ornaments like candles. Japanese Christmas TreesThere is only approximately 1% of Christians among the Japanese, thatâ??s why Christmas is not a national holiday in Japan. As a matter of fact, the year-end celebration is more important than Christmas. Trees are beautified with small toys, wind chimes, small candles, and gold paper fans and lanterns.

Chinese Christmas TreesChristians in China only comprise 3% to 4% of the countryâ??s population. With this small percentage, most families put up artificial trees decorated with paper flowers, lanterns and paper chains. Christmas trees are called â??trees of light.â??

Philippine Christmas TreesFresh pine trees are highly priced for many Filipinos to afford. Thus, handmade trees are often utilized. Filipinos make star lanterns (â??parolâ??) out of bamboo sticks wrapped with brightly colored cellophane or rice paper.

Saudi Arabian Christmas TreesChristians in Saudi Arabia privately celebrate Christmas in their homes. Moreover, Christmas lights are not well-tolerated. Most families situate their trees somewhere out of sight and embellish as they would in their home countries.

Itâ??s that time of year when everyone gets close to those they love. They remember what they are thankful for and think about what they want to hold on for the future. Christmas engagements are very common and in fact, most engagements actually happen around the holidays! Some guys are clueless when it comes to proposing on Christmas, or thinking of Christmas engagement ideas. Here are a few ideas to either give you the picture perfect holiday engagement, or to spark your creativity to say â??Merry Christmasâ?? in the most surprising way!Make the Ring the OrnamentA cute way to propose at Christmas is to hang the ring on the Christmas tree â?? like an ornament! Have the ring be the ONLY ornament on the tree when she walks inâ?¦or, hang the ring box with ribbon on the tree and point out the â??interestingâ?? new ornament. She wonâ??t know what to think!Visit Santa Claus No, seriously. Go to the mall and visit Santa Claus. This could be the making of the perfect Christmas engagement! Tell her you know what she wants for Christmasâ?¦then BOOM. Drop down on one knee in front of everyone. She will have to say that Santa knew what she wanted! (Cheesy, but true!)The Magic of MistletoeEveryone knows that the Christmas tradition is to kiss under the mistletoeâ?¦so why not take it a step further? Give her a quick smooch then pop the question right there â?? propose under the Christmas mistletoe! It is a romantic, personal, and intimate way to share the moment together. The Bottom of the StockingThis Christmas engagement proposal idea is pretty easy to figure out. Hide the ring box at the very bottom of her Christmas stocking. When she goes through all the candy and little things along the way, the best present yet will be waiting at the bottom â?? an engagement ring! The Stroke of MidnightAnother interesting Christmas proposal idea is to ask the question when the clock strikes midnight â?? that moment between Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. You can bring in the holiday the very second it begins with your surprise Christmas engagement. With the Family Gathered â??RoundThis Christmas engagement idea is one that you can only do if you are comfortable and on good terms with the family! If you both are super close to your families, try popping the question of marriage when the family is together to celebrate the holiday. Then everyone can celebrate together when she says, â??Yes!â??.Christmas AbroadMany people travel for the Christmas holiday. Try taking a trip to an exotic location, somewhere you both love. Whether it be the heart of Europe or the coast of Costa Rica, a creative way to propose at Christmas is to ask her when you are somewhere completely new â?? an adventure you are both on together! The best part will be coming back home to share the happy news.A Romantic Evening OutMaybe a romantic date for the two of you is a way you might be more comfortable with when proposing at Christmas. Try planning a lovey dovey romantic date night out. A carriage ride downtown, looking at the Christmas lights in the snow, dinner at a fancy restaurant under candlelight, or a home cooked meal at home with Christmas music playing in the background offer the perfect Christmas engagement setting.Personalize It! (The Ornament, that is)We all have seen those ornaments in the mall and other shops where you can personalize your own Christmas ornament. Try putting those 4 words on a Christmas ornament! Have it engraved or painted on, then leave it on the tree and lead her to it. You wonâ??t even have to talk! The ornament will speak for itself.Christmas Photo AlbumA creative way to propose, and a perfect gift in itself, is a customized photo album with photos of the two of you. Websites like Shutterfly can create amazing Christmas photo albums that you can give to her as a gift. Make the last picture in the album a photo of the ring. Then ask away.Ask In BedThis is probably the most intimate way to ask that heart stopping question. On Christmas morning, stay in bed. Keep things personal and private with each other. Asking her to marry you in bed on Christmas morning might not seem like the most creative way to propose at Christmas, but it will be a moment just the two of you can share in an environment and space the two of you only share.

A favorite Christmas song has a line that describes Christmas as ‘the most wonderful time of the year.’ While giving and receiving gifts is something that is highly anticipated and remembered at Christmas time, there are also many more activities that make Christmas memorable and wonderful. One of these activities is decorating the Christmas tree. The Christmas tree occupies a central spot and is the most visible display of Christmas in most homes. Unlike in other countries, most American homes do not have a representation of the Nativity scene, which is more likely to be located at churches. As soon as the Christmas season begins on the day after Thanksgiving, families will begin their search for the perfect Christmas tree. This in itself can become a memorable activity as children may accompany family members to places like a Christmas tree farm to select a tree. Once a real or artificial tree is selected, then it’s an exciting activity for the entire family to play a part in decorating the tree. Manufactured decorations come in many shapes and forms. But a special memory is created when family members make a special ornament for the Christmas tree, or contribute one or more keepsake items to decorate the Christmas tree. It then becomes a ritual each year for those particular items to be placed on the Christmas tree although other decorations may change in coming years. Another activity that can help to create special memories at Christmas is baking cookies. Along with popular gingerbread cookies, using cookie cutters to make special holiday-shaped cookies is also practiced a lot in households. Based on the ages of children, they can help in the actual baking activity by measuring and mixing some ingredients, or, younger children can sprinkle sugar on the cookies or decorate them with icing when they are finished. Helping in this activity can also be educational as parents can use the activity of measuring and figuring out equivalent measures to teach fractions and other mathematical elements. An activity that is related to food which also helps to create memories during the Christmas season is making fruit and goody baskets, which are filled with candies, baked items and other treats for loved ones, their special friends, neighbors, teachers or for charity. Items such as goody baskets make especially wonderful Christmas gifts because they are home-made. That quality often makes them more treasured than a Christmas present that is bought at the store. Because Christmas is the season of goodwill and good cheer, it is very important to reach out to family, loved ones and friends during the season. The busy lives that many people lead today often leaves them little or no time during the year to be in frequent contact with family and friends who are located far away, or even others who live within a reasonable distance in the same or a neighboring state, for example. It is therefore very common during Christmas to send a Christmas or holiday greeting card to those individuals. Along with the pleasant memory of receiving the card, there may be a short letter included that gives a brief account of any significant event in the individual’s life or with members of the family. That makes sending and receiving Christmas greeting cards more memorable. Then there’s probably the most anticipated activity of Christmas – finding out what Christmas gift Santa brought on Christmas Eve. While adults also look forward with much anticipation to see what Christmas gifts they will get, it’s really the children who get the most delight from receiving presents at Christmas. The carefully planned actions to hide Christmas presents from children and then to magically place them under the Christmas tree to be found on Christmas morning is one of the most wonderful ways to create unforgettable memories for children at Christmas.

I am Snoopy the wet-nosed poodle, and I will be speaking in behalf of my furry friends all over the world. You can call me the Doggies Ambassador for Christmas! Approve?! I hope so…

Wondering why they call me the wet-nosed poodle? Sounds like a “puddle” right? Poodle originated from the German word “pudel” meaning “one who plays in water.” Oh well, I lick my nose every time that’s why it’s always wet… that means I’m happy and healthy!

Enough about me, This Christmas expect your doggies to have wet nose all the time. Why? Pooches are also happy and excited to celebrate the holiday season. And my fellow doggies want me to let you know about the Doggies Christmas wish list.

When Fido’s feel the breeze becoming cooler, Christmas is just around the corner!!! And guess what? We are hoping to receive a Dog Christmas Gift from you. That’s number one in the doggies Christmas wish list.

Like you when doggies think about Christmas…the first thing that pops in your pets’ mind is Gift. So don’t forget to include your pet in the gift list, mark it red…dogs Christmas gift.

Wondering what’s in the doggies’ Christmas wish list? Here are a few things to give you an idea:

1. Dog Christmas Present which may include a new dog collar, leash, and a dog bed.

2. Dog Christmas toys with a squeaky sound and a new ball to have some fun.

3. A dog Santa stocking hang on the window for a dog Christmas treat like biscuits.

4. A dog Christmas outfit to wear on the Christmas Eve to celebrate with the family.

5. A dog Santa hat to wear during the holiday season that will match a dog Santa costume!

6. A dogs’ Christmas photo with the whole family on Christmas day!

7. And most importantly a nice doggy massage and a cuddle to feel the love from their pet owner.

Those are examples of things doggies think about to celebrate Christmas. Just like you, every pooch is also happy to open its’ own Christmas gift with the rest of the family.

Surprise! Surprise! Doggies love the excitement to find out what they got. And I bet you’ll have lots of fun when you see your doggy roll over the floor hugging its’ new Christmas toy.

On the first day of Christmas your doggy wish to see… a dog Christmas gift…a love for your pet…arf! arf! Under the Christmas tree!

Ho! Ho! Ho! Woof! Woof! Woof! Have a Doggy Merry Christmas! Greetings from Santa Claus and Snoopy the wet-nosed poodle, substitute for Rudolph the red-nose reindeer!

Again…Don’t forget Snoopy the wet-nosed poodle will be happy to deliver your dogs Christmas gifts!!!

In the midst of the holiday season with Christmas right around the corner everyone is hustling and bustling to get their Christmas shopping done and their homes decorated for the holidays so they can enjoy their family Christmas traditions. Offices, shops, and churches are also being decorated for the Christmas Season. One of the most common and beloved Christmas traditions is putting up a Christmas tree. Christmas Trees are also a common Christmas decoration in shops, public places and churches.

The origin of the Christmas Tree

According to tradition, the Christmas Tree originated in Riga, Latvia. The Christmas legend says that a monk named Boniface used its triangular shape of an evergreen tree to to explain the trinity – that God was Father, Son and Holy Spirit. From that point on, the Germans called the tree “God’s Tree.”

In Western Germany in the 16th century, evergreen trees were used in plays to represent the tree in the garden Eden with Adam and Eve and they were decorated with apples. (Actually an apple is never mentioned in the Bible as the forbidden fruit from the Graden of Eden, but that’s the tradition.) Anyway, they were called “Paradeisbaum” (Paradise Trees) and were soon brought into homes and decorated with apples and other fruits to celebrate Christmas. Later, dates, pretzels, and nuts were also used to decorate the tree.

To add meaning to the tradition, the evergreen tree was also recognized as a symbol of eternal life because its leaves were always green. Soon candles were also added to the evergreen branches to represent the stars that would have shown in the sky the night of the Savior’s birth and to symbolize that Jesus was the light of the world.

Besides apples and other fruits, tradition says they also added Communion wafers wrapped in gold and silver foil that represented the fact that Jesus came into the world to save it, that like the communion bread, his body would be broken to save us from sin. Later the wafers were replaced with cookies cut into the shapes of bells, angels, stars, and hearts. All of these add to the tradition of the Christmas Tree and how it is used in Christmas Celebrations around the world today.

Trimming the Tree

Many families have their own unique ways of setting up the Christmas tree for the holidays. Putting up and trimming the tree is a great way to bring the family together and enjoy the Christmas holidays. There are many excellent ideas for decorating your Christmas tree to consider too. Of course, all Christmas Trees look great with lights on them.

When setting up your Christmas Tree, the very first decision that has to be made is to decide exactly what kind of Christmas tree you want to decorate. There a several kinds of trees that are traditional holiday favorites. Some Christmas trees are considered regional favorites, but you can usually get any kind of tree you want to have. Fir trees are always a great choice and the three that stand out are the Noble, Douglas, and Frasier Firs. The boughs of these Firs are usually very full and they smell terrific. The Blue Spruce is an excellent choice for the same reasons as the Firs. Some pines are also very good for Christmas decorating too.

When decorating your Christmas tree you should consider using both garlands and tinsel in order to add color and to fill in the open areas of your Christmas tree, which will give your Christmas tree a fuller appearance. The good thing about garland and tinsel is that it is relatively inexpensive, which is not something you generally hear about anything over the holidays. Another great thing about garland and tinsel is that it comes in a wide variety of colors, which means that you should be able to find your favorite Christmas colors easily. One drawback to garland and tinsel is that it is flammable so be careful when hanging these items on your tree.

Most people who have been brought up in families where the celebration of Christmas and trimming the tree in particular is a very important tradition tend to have many heirloom decorations that they place on the trees. It is always a great idea to decorate the Christmas tree with ornaments that are important to the family and have sentimental value. Just be careful with these types of tree decorations because they tend to be very fragile. Many of the older Christmas Ornaments are made of glass, or some kind of ceramics, although they may be made of other materials as well.

If you need to go shopping for Christmas ornaments there are a couple of things to consider before you make your purchases. The first thing to think about is how safe they will be, and that question is usually answered by whether or not you have children. Children like to play with ornaments particularly if they are of favorite carton characters or something similar, and in this case plastic ornaments are a safe bet. Glass ornaments are of course very beautiful and come in many shapes, colors, and sizes and if your children are older or if you do not have any are safe and a great investment.

In addition to store bought ornaments, and heirloom ornaments, hand-made ornaments are also great and can be very meaningful. Check out a craft site for great ideas for hand made ornaments.

2000 years ago, in the city of Bethlehem, a baby was born in a manger. He was the child of God, born to a virgin. Jesus came into the world, as a promise made to Abraham, that one day he would send his son to the world to save us from our sins. Thus, formed the beautiful story of Christmas. This is the story, told to children for generations. We believe and trust in Jesus. Every Christmas, we celebrate this festival with zest and excitement. All year round we wait for the Christmas season. We decorate our houses with bliss and adoration. The preparation of cake, the decoration of Xmas trees and visiting our family and friends, surround our main idea of Christmas.

In all this mess, we forget the main purpose of Christmas. God sent his son into this world, so that he could bring to smile to every one’s face. It is our duty, as children of God to spread happiness all around us and not only to our families and friends. On an occasion like Christmas, we should help the unfortunate who don’t have anyone to celebrate Christmas with. This is the best gift we could give our Lord. So this Christmas, instead of blasting music and annoying our neighbors, let us plan something worthwhile for our less fortunate brothers and sisters. Below are a few Christmas ideas you could use in order to follow the true meaning of Christmas:

(1) Plan a Christmas party in an orphanage:

It is an amazing feeling, to see these children smile, because you have done something special for them. When we were small, we have memories of our Christmas being surrounded with our parents making it as special as possible, to us. These children, have no one to care for, but they too deserve a lot love and care. Jesus said, ‘Let the children come to me and do not stop them’. Jesus really loved children. On his birthday, what could be a better gift than to plan a Christmas celebration, for these children. Plan a small celebration, at an orphanage. You could decorate the place, arrange for homemade Christmas dishes specially prepared, get them Christmas gifts etc. Spend the day with them, tell them stories and organize games for them. Make the day as special as possible for them.

(2) Visit an Old Aged Home:

An old aged home is a place, where old individuals who have nobody to look after them live. Often, they are abandoned by their children and left to fend for themselves. Old aged homes, pick up such individuals and look after them. These people, usually feel really lonely and miss going home. They silently wait for the day, when they will perish. This Christmas, visit an old aged home. Take your family and friends along. A gesture, as simple as this could leave ever lasting imprints on the minds of your children. They will learn values of respecting elders and compassion for the helpless. Christmas, teaches us the values of love and generosity. Let us spread it, to those who have less of love around them. You could, talk to them and sing Christmas carols along with them. Make this Christmas a special day for them.

(3) Pay a visit to an HIV positive center for Children:

These centers consist of children who have been turned away from orphanages, schools and hospitals. Their fault being, that they are HIV positive or their families are HIV positive. HIV positive, being treated as a taboo; children infected by this deadly virus are often shunned away from the society. Nobody would adopt them and many a time people don’t even like to visit them. Watching your own parents die, can be a very painful experience. Not only have these children watched their parents dying, but they have also been orphaned at a young age and made to look after themselves. This Christmas take your family and organize a Christmas celebration for these kids. You could arrange for someone dressed up as Santa Claus giving out gifts to each of these kids. Games and food, could complete the Christmas celebration. On an auspicious occasion like Christmas, make the day special to these children. For you, it would be just a day, but it will mean a lot to them.

(4) Register for Eye Donation:

Eye donation, refers to an act where a person registers to an agreement, to donate his or her eyes after death. It is a small act of kindness, but it can bring a lot of changes in another person’s life. A person, doesn’t require his eyes after he dies. However, donating your eyes to a blind person, can change his or her life forever. Christmas, is a time for caring and sharing for the unfortunate. On Christmas, pledge to donate your eyes to an eye donation center. Your eyes will be used after your death and give sight to someone, who is probably dying everyday to see the world. The feeling of being of use to someone even after you die, is priceless.

(5) Go for Blood Donation:

Blood, can be only generated from a human body and from no other source. We don’t lose anything when we donate blood. However, it can be of great use to someone else. On a occasion like Christmas, you could arrange for a blood donation drive. What could be a better gift to God, than helping his own children who are in need. You don’t lose anything by donating a bottle of blood, but that bottle of blood can save lives. A simple gesture of this sort, will give you the feeling of saving some one’s life which is one of a kind. There is never a day when someone doesn’t require blood, by donating blood on a day like Christmas can make a huge difference to many families.

Above are a few ideas how you could celebrate your Christmas, in the most meaningful way possible. God never asked for a huge party. He never even asked for candies and treats. All he asked was, for a clean heart and the willingness to be there for one and other. Have a peaceful Christmas.
